Here’s an excellent reason to lose that spare tire around your middle: Abdominal obesity Increases your chances of developing diabetic kidney disease. Chinese researchers recently conducted 2 studies of people with type-2 diabetes. One involved 1, 016 people with chronic kidney disease in varying stages. The other followed 279 participants for 6 years, during which time 15% developed chronic kidney disease. As published in this article, both studies, even after adjusting for other risk factors, such as a high body mass index (BMI, this is a measure of body fat based on weight and height) and high blood pressure, belly fat stood out as a major culprit of this often-devastating disease. And the 1st study found a link between higher levels of belly fat and more-advanced kidney disease. The message: lose weight and you may save your kidneys.
